Ramadhan is a month full of blessings and rewards, but to reap them, Muslims are encouraged to perform more ibadah or religious acts. Fasting in Ramadhan is not confined to staying away from food, drinks and intimate relations during the daytime. There are more that the ummah must leave or avoid, especially the spiritual activities. The Friday sermon entitled, 'Increase acts of devotion in Ramadhan', highlighted some of the spiritual aspects.
Fasting in the holy month is not simply controlling physical actions. There are also spiritual obligations which are described by the great Muslim scholar and mystic, Al-Imam Al-Ghazali such as controlling the eyes from looking at things that Islam prohibits because they can make people forget Allah the Almighty.
The great Imam said it is also a must to guard the tongue against saying non-beneficial things, lying, back stabbing, slander, arrogance and others that can cause animosity.
Thirdly, it is prohibited to listen to matters or things which Allah the Most Sublime prohibits. Iman Ghazali added, what is haram or prohibited to say is also haram to hear. And finally, Islam teaches all its ummah to guard or control all other parts of the body from committing sins or vice.
This includes avoiding breaking the fast with 'syubhah' or dubious food or drinks. This is because fasting will be in vain when one breaks the fast with dubious or haram things.
