Teacher’s Decision Costs Him Dear, Car Swept by Flood Water

Villagers trying to prevent the teacher’s car from being swept further by the strong current.

KUCHING, SARAWAK

A teacher who attempted to drive his car through a flooded stretch of road paid the price after his vehicle was swept away at Kampung Stabut in Padawan near here about 6am yesterday.

Sources said the teacher, in his 30s, was making his way from his house to the school when the incident happened.

However, the heavy rainfall that began the previous night had caused flash flood in the village and inundated the road leading in and out of the village.

“The teacher made the decision to drive through the flooded stretch as there was no other route he could take to his workplace.

“It proved to be the wrong decision when his car was swept away by the strong current, although he was fortunate to be able to exit the vehicle and seek help,” said the source.

It is understood a number of villagers had witnessed the teacher’s close call and immediately came to his aid.

“The teacher’s car was swept into a drain not far from the scene and was later towed out by a lorry belonging to a villager,” added the source.

Meanwhile, several low-lying areas in Kota Samarahan and Padawan were affected by rising water following the moderate but steady rainfall.

Among villages affected by the flash flood were Kampung Jaie Ulu, Semera Ulu and Simpok.

A spokesperson from the state Civil Defence Department said their personnel were deployed to the ground to monitor the water level at Batu Kitang, Rantau Panjang, Taman Malihah and Tupong.

“The monitoring of low-lying areas was conducted until around noon today (yesterday) as the rain started to stop and water level began to subside,” added the spokesperson.
