Laos, Vietnam Enhance Ties, Cooperation

VIENTIANE, LAOS
President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Tran Dai Quang arrived in Vientiane on Sunday for a three-day visit to strengthen the special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two Parties, governments and people of Laos and Vietnam.
Following a welcoming ceremony at the Presidential Palace, the Presidents of the two countries and their delegations of senior officials proceeded to their bilateral meeting, also held at the palace, where President Bounnhang highly valued the visit by his Vietnamese counterpart Quang as a confirmation and strengthening of the longstanding cooperation between Laos and Vietnam.
The two leaders appreciate and highly value the fruitful cooperation the two countries have maintained and nurtured over the past years.
Both sides agreed to promote regular exchanges of visits at all levels and maintain peace along common borders.
They committed to better cooperation on preventing transnational crimes, human trafficking, trans-boundary smuggling of drugs or other goods, and the illegal exploitation of natural resources across common borders.
They also agreed to attach greater importance to addressing illegal settlements and illegal marriages of people living along border areas and to further enhance cooperation in economics, trade, and investment to achieve goals set by the two governments.
The state leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation on the development of road connectivity to improve land transportation between the two countries and to increase the quality of cooperation in the educational sphere in a highly effective manner, especially in the education of students studying in each other’s countries
Both sides noted that 2017 constitutes an important year as the two countries will commemorate the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty.
On the occasion, President Tran Dai Quang presented a US$ 1 million grant to fund the construction of schools in Xekong Province.
