Every day, adults, children and infants undergo surgeries and medical treatments requiring blood transfusions. These lifesaving procedures need blood that is donated by people like you and me.

One blood donation can save the lives of three other people. Donating blood allows those of us who are healthy, to do our bit to help others who are not as fortunate.

Today, June 14, on the occasion of the 13th World Blood Donor Day, the Ministry of Health would like to take this opportunity to appreciate and pay tribute to the men and women in Brunei Darussalam who are blood donors.

This celebration is a global event and this year's theme, 'Blood connects us all', highlights the importance of regular blood donation by those who can.

In 2015, Brunei Darussalam received a total of 15,183 blood donors including 3,160 registered new blood donors.

In order to ensure that this supply remains sufficient, safe and sustainable, we invite more blood donors to come forward.

"Health is everyone's business" and as blood donors, we can play our part in ensuring that the people most in need of healthcare, some of whom may be our families and loved ones, are able to continue long and fulfilling lives.

The Ministry of Health works continuously with our partners in other government agencies, educational institutions, uniformed forces, the private sector and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to coordinate blood donation campaigns in all four districts.

We want to create ample opportunities and a welcoming space for new blood donors to participate in this worthwhile endeavour.

We assure you that your donation will not be wasted; our newly renovated Blood Donation Centre and the Blood Bank at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital will ensure that your blood donation is screened and treated in accordance with the highest international standards.

Undoubtedly, the global objective of today's World Blood Donor Day is relevant to the Ministry of Health's strategic priorities which are to drive the 'Health is everyone's business' agenda, enhance the quality of service delivery and prevent and control non-communicable diseases.

On this occasion, I once again extend my heartiest appreciation and congratulations to all our blood donor heroes who have served the country to help save countless lives in need.
