After falling from a four storey building in Denmark and cutting his chest on the way down, TinTin the squirrel was abandoned by his mother, who left him for dead.

Fortunately, the little squirrel fell into the garden of Decan Andersen, who had initially left the squirrel in the hope his mother would come back for him.

When he realised the baby squirrel had been rejected by its family, he picked him up off the wet, cold grass and took him indoors, where he called the vet.

In the meantime, he put the squirrel next to his cat, Coco, who he says ‘immediately understood the situation’ and started to wash, clean and cuddle TinTin to warm him up.

Decan took the squirrel to the vet to be patched up and, in order to keep him from scratching and irritating his wounds, made him tiny jumpers out of socks for him to wear.

Both practical and extremely adorable.

From there he became part of the family, making firm friends with Coco, who continued to look after the recovering Tintin.

After recovering fully from the ordeal, it was clear that Tintin had spent too much time with humans to be released back into the wild.

That meant that he became a permanent fixture in Decan and Coco’s life, becoming the best of friends and going everywhere with them.

‘The red squirrel is an endangered species in many counties, and therefore illegal to capture and hold as pets,’ Decan writes on Tintin’s website.

‘But under Tintin’s special circumstances, I’ve gotten exclusive permission from the Danish wildlife preservation to care and nurse for Tintin til the end of his days, in a good 15 to 20 years from now.’

The squirrel has become something of an internet celebrity already, even receiving gifts from his ever-growing legion of fans.

‘Now he is little superstar around our neighborhood, and he loves the attention and getting his pictures taken,’ Decan adds. ‘We regularly visit the forest nearby, where he shows us what he likes to eat, and not eat.

‘As many pet stores don’t have nuts in shells or pine cones, we collect a huge stash a couple of times a week.

‘Besides the natural food, he also likes rabbit food, corns, lettuce, tomatoes and all that sorta good stuff.’
