An unusual new weight loss device that removes food from the stomach before it is digested has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The AspireAssist system extracts about a third of the food within the stomach before it can contribute to weight gain.

However, the procedure will only be offered to obese patients with a BMI between 35 and 55 who have not been able to lose weight in other ways.

A trial in the USA showed patients lost an average of 12% of their total body weight a year after the procedure.

The method consists of a thin tube planted inside the stomach connected to an outside port on the belly.

About 20 minutes after finishing a meal, once food has travelled to the stomach, users connect the port to an exterior device which drains the food into the toilet.

Manufacturer Aspire Bariatrics says the system removes about 30 per cent of food inside the stomach.

FDA deputy director Dr. William Maisel said: ‘Patients need to be regularly monitored by their health care provider and should follow a lifestyle program to help them develop healthier eating habits and reduce their calorie intake.’
