LÂM ĐỒNG, VIETNAM

A head-on collision of two passenger coaches yesterday along Prenn mountain pass in Đà Lạt killed at least eight people and injured 30 others.

A 50-seat coach en route from Đà Lạt in the Central Highlands province of Lâm Đồng to HCM City hit a road worker along the mountain pass, which is being upgraded. The bus then lost control and struck another 50-seat coach that was heading to Đà Lạt from Phan Thiết City in Bình Thuận Province.

Local authorities are working to clear the traffic and investigate the cause of the accident. The 30 injured people were rushed to Lâm Đồng General Hospital and Hoàn Mỹ Hospital.

Chairman of the Lâm Đồng People’s Council Nguyễn Xuân Tiến and Chairman of the Lâm Đồng People’s Committee Đoàn Văn Việt visited the victims’ families and offered them financial support. The aid comes in the amount of VNĐ10 million (US$440) for each deceased victim, and VNĐ3 million ($130) for each injured person. Treatment for the patients at Lâm Đồng General Hospital will be provided free of charge.

Local authorities also asked the provincial Department of Transport to review the implementation of work at Prenn pass to ensure traffic safety.

Chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety and Deputy Prime Minister Trương Hòa Bình sent a dispatch to the Ministry of Transport as well as the chairmen of Lâm Đồng and Bình Thuận provinces to ask for efforts to minimise losses and compensate victims.

Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc also sent condolences to victims’ families.
