Close to 400 people were made homeless when fire destroyed about 80 wooden houses at a squatter area in Kampung Tanjung Kapor here early yesterday morning.
A Sabah Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson yesterday said the Kudat fire station received a distress call at 1.48am and four fire engines with 28 firefighters from Kudat and Kota Marudu stations were sent to the scene.
According to the spokesperson, firefighters faced difficulty to put out the blaze as most of
the structures were wooden houses and packed too close together.
The spokesperson however said that no untoward incident was reported and the whole operation ended around 7am.
The cause of the fire and total losses are still under investigation.
This was the second major fire to hit Kudat.
On May 23, a predawn fire wiped out a massive squatter colony of 250 wooden stilt houses at Kampung Landung Ayang Laut, about three kilometres from Kudat town, leaving over 2,000 people homeless.
