Foreigner Fined for Attempted Smuggling

An Indian man was ordered by the Magistrate's Court yesterday to pay a fine of BND$1,100, or serve four months' jail in default, after he pleaded guilty to possessing smuggled alcohol and cigarettes.
The forty-six-year-old defendant, Thavasimany Ganeshamoorthy, paid the fine.
Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman heard from the Customs prosecutor that the defendant arrived in his car at the Kuala Lurah Control Post at 9.20 pm on March 28 and informed the Customs examiner that he had only one person's quota of alcoholic beverages to declare.
The examiner inspected the. defendant's car and found an excess of eight bottles and 12 cans of beer, two bottles of liquor as well as one carton and 10 packets of cigarettes.
