BERAKAS, BRUNEI-MUARA

As their first overseas competition for this year, four national athletes from track and field are heading to the Philippines National Open from April 7-9 to compete with top athletes from the region.

In order to gain much needed exposure from international competitions, the self-funded athletes who are looking to improve their own performance at the competition are Awang Mohammad Fakhri Ismail and Dayang Maizurah binti Abdul Rahim, both recipients of the training scholarship by International Olympic Committee (IOC) last year in preparation for the Rio Olympic 2016, Dayang Maziah Mahusin the first female Olympian of Brunei and rising star Mohd Ammar Safwan Haji Zaidin.

Mohammad Fakhri who smashed the 100m national record with a time of 10.59s during the Singapore SEA Games last year highlighted: "This will be our first competition overseas for this year. I hope that I can maintain my performance level and try to win a medal for the country."

Top athletes from Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia are also expected to compete in the competition.

Meanwhile, Maziah will be competing in the 200m together with Maizurah.

The former Brunei Olympian Maziah said: "I am hoping to give my best to at least obtain a podium finish for my event. I also hoped that I could break my personal best record in the competition."

The first female Olympian for Brunei who will be finishing her studies this year is also looking forward to represent Brunei in the Asean University Games in August in Singapore.

Sixteen-year-old Mohd Ammar Safwan will be running in the 400m and is looking to start the year with a good result that will carry the positive momentum throughout the year.

Mohd Ammar Safwan who also competed in the Commonwealth Youth Games and Thailand Open last year is hoping to maintain his good form and improved his personal best time of 51.07s.
