April 1, 2016 | H.E. Kazuo Sunaga, the new Ambassador of Japan to ASEAN, yesterday presented his Letter of Credence to H.E. Le Luong Minh, Secretary General of ASEAN at the ASEAN Secretariat. Ambassador Kazuo is the fourth Ambassador of Japan accredited to ASEAN since Japan established its Mission to ASEAN in 2011.
Secretary-General Minh congratulated Ambassador Sunaga on his assumption of office. He expressed pleasure with the further strengthening and deepening of the ASEAN-Japan partnership following the momentum of the Leaders’ Special Summit on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of ASEAN-Japan relations in December 2013.
The ASEAN Secretary-General stressed that both sides need to continue the effective implementation of the Vision Statement on ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation and its Implementation Plan to forge closer relations.
Ambassador Sunaga looked forward to working closely with ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretariat to further enhance ASEAN-Japan relations. Japan supports ASEAN efforts in strengthening ASEAN-led mechanisms such as the East Asia Summit. Further, he reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to support ASEAN Community-building efforts beyond 2015.
Both sides exchanged views on regional issues of common interest and concern. Secretary-General Minh shared on the priorities of ASEAN in 2016 as the first year of implementing the ASEAN Community Vision 2025.
