Forget Mama Grizzlies – this rat is the most ferocious mum in the animal kingdom.

When she sees her child in the mouth of a snake, she immediately attacks, pouncing and biting at the serpent’s tail despite it being five times as long as her.

As the animal slithers towards the undergrowth with the tiny baby in its jaws, there’s little chance of a happy ending for the rat family.

But miraculously, the snake is intimidated enough by the mother rat that it drops its meal and creeps away still hungry.

Frozen in terror, the baby stays motionless on the road while its mother races around the long grass, making sure the snake doesn’t return.

heating death for the second time, the little rat runs out of the way just before a car zooms past.

Long-suffering mum picks up her child in her mouth (a common way for rats to transport their young) and runs off to safety.

Is this act of maternal love on a par with Lily Potter saving Harry from Voldemort? We think so, yes.
