Less-fortunate elderly couple Awang Haji Isa bin Kelali, 81, and his wife, Dayang Samah binti Saidil, 78, had their festive spirits lifted yesterday after 50 volunteers lent a helping hand in sprucing up their Kampong Menengah home.

The noble activity was organised by the Volunteers Unit of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolldah and Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM).

The couple was also presented with a new sofa set, floor mats and essential items by volunteer officer from Yayasan Volunteers Unit – Dayang Sufinah binti Haji Sulaiman; and a personal donation from YL Motor, handed over by YL Motor representative Chong Yu Ming as well as a representative from MKM.

Haji Isa, who recently underwent heart surgery and has hearing problems, and his wife each received the old age pension of B$250.

The MKM had previously made a visit to the couple's house and learnt that it was in a barely livable condition.

Also lending a helping hand were Village Head of Kampong Lamunin, Awang Rosli bin Ahmad and members of the Kampong Lamunin Village Consultative Council.
