A memo allegedly of a contractor circulating in social media resulted in immediate 'goodwill' action by Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) yesterday.
According to a BSP release on July 2, one of the contractors issued a memo to all of its employees with regard to their June salary payments. Subsequently, this memo has also been circulated on social media. The memo alleged that the contractor would not be able to pay the salaries of its employees for the month of June due to the refusal of BSP to pay the contractor's May 2016 invoice.
"BSP is taking the allegation by the contractor that it will not pay its employees' June salary entitlements very seriously. Whilst it is the contractor's legal responsibility to pay employees' salaries, out of goodwill and care for the contractor's employees, BSP is taking several measures to ensure that the welfare of the contractor's people is safeguarded," the statement said.
"BSP stresses that these goodwill payments are being made without prejudice to BSP's legal rights against the contractor, which are expressly reserved. BSP conducts business responsibly by observing the laws of Brunei Darussalam and expects and requires that its contractors do the same. As the contractor's allegation is of a very serious nature, BSP is also working closely with the relevant authorities to help resolve this issue," the statement clarified.
