Civil Servant, Businessman Get 12 Months for Corruption

A government servant and a businessman were sentenced to 12 months ofimprisonment yesterday by the Magistrate's Court, following a trial of corruption and graft, during which an application for a stay of execution for the defendants was denied.
Wadi bin Haji Mohd Tuah, an Assistant Superintendent of the Fire and Rescue Department, was charged on two counts of obtaining valuable items without consideration, while Yap Tiew Hon, the Managing Director of Syarikat Pro-Team Construction and Trading Sdn Bhd Yap Tiew Hon, was charged with abetting both of Wadi's offences.
Wadi obtained 550 homogenous tiles valued at $605, from Yap, and two tonnes of cement valued at $350, on November, 2011.
Yap abetted both of these offences.
Wadi had been tasked with inspecting and approving a Housing Development Project at Lot 27231, Simpang 52-55-30 in Kampong Mata-Mata, while Yap's company was developing the site.
Senior Magistrate Pengiran Masni Pengiran Bahar handed down the sentences.
DPP Emily Goh handled the prosecution's case, while Wadi was represented by Yusuf Halim, and Yap by Balendran Balasingam and Rozaiman bin Abdul Rahman.
