The Special Branch is monitoring activities related to the Malay language edition of a newspaper believed to be published by the Islamic State (IS).
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said action would be taken against those who view or download articles from the publication via the internet.
“We have acts or regulations that could be used to take action against those who surf or print the materials.
"The police also have a special unit to monitor these activities and communications through internal and external networks," he said at the Hilir Perak district-level Teachers' Day celebration at SM Sains Bagan Datoh on Tuesday.
Ahmad Zahid said the police have not gotten a hard copy of the newspaper but they have surfed the online version of the newspaper.
“We know its intention is to get support from sympathisers, especially those who know Bahasa Malaysia.
“About 90% of IS' propaganda uses the social media," he said.
"They know the Gen Y can be influenced through the latest technology," he added.
