Aewon Brunei Sponsored Jackets for Go Players

BERAKAS, BRUNEI-MUARA

Three Go players from Brunei Darussalam Go Association received a boost for the 20th Asian University Go Tournament hosted by Chulalongkorn University in Thailand after sponsorship of jackets by Aewon Brunei to the team yesterday.

The Managing Director of Aewon Brunei, Lau Chai Seng presented the jackets to the team's head coach Chin Sin Voon.

Recently, the game of Go received international attention when Google's artificially intelligent Go-playing computer system defeated Korean grandmaster Lee Sedol, finishing the best-of-five series with four wins and one loss.

The game of GO is a 2,500-year-old game and is one of the oldest board games played with high complexity.

The tournament from April 4-9 will see participation from hot favourite Japan, Korea and China as well as Southeast Asia's countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

The three players representing Brunei are Awangku Abu Afiq bin Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar, Sia Kao Xiang and Winston Ang Ho Soon.

The trio is hoping to gain good exposure and achieve good results in the tournament.

For Sia Kao Xiang, it's his first tournament representing Brunei abroad although he did compete in the UK during his studies.

"I hope to meet different players and learn from therm," Sia said.

"Go is a very complex game and to win, we need to come up with the best strategy of defence and offence. Therefore this tournament will help me gain my experience and hopefully adding to new techniques of play," Sia added.

Meanwhile, Winston Ang said he hoped to achieve at least three wins in the competition to carry the momentum for the rest of the year.

Winston has taken part in Go tournaments in Korea and China and achieved fairly good results of two to three wins.

"The Thailand's competition will also be a good preparation for the upcoming 3rd SEA Go Championship to be hosted by Brunei Darussalam in December this year.
