Catcher Francisco Cervelli is returning to the Pittsburgh Pirates' lineup Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers after missing Pittsburgh's past 31 games following surgery on a broken hamate bone in his left hand.
The Pirates also activated right-handed starting pitcher Jameson Taillon from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday in an expected move. He was already listed as the starting pitcher for Tuesday night's game against the Brewers.
Cervelli, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 11, went 4-for-10 with three walks and an RBI in three Triple-A rehab games before being recalled.
The injury came less than a month after he agreed to a three-year, $31 million deal through the 2019 season.
Cervelli, 30, is hitting .257 with 21 RBIs in 49 games this year with the Pirates. Last season, he appeared in a career-high 130 games.
The 24-year-old Taillon, one of the Pirates' top pitching prospects, had been on the disabled list with shoulder fatigue. In five starts this season, he is 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA.
To make room for Cervelli and Taillon the roster, the Pirates designated catcher Erik Kratz for assignment and sent right-handed pitcher Chad Kuhl to Triple-A.
