KUCHING, SARAWAK

The rain did not stop the performers from putting up a spectacular show for the opening ceremony of 2016 Sukma at Sarawak Stadium here last night.

The spectators at the 30,000-capacity stadium were captivated by the ceremony that saw the participation of more than 3,000 performers comprising students from institutions of higher learning and schools.

The ceremony, which was also broadcast live on TV1, started with a 90-second special projection mapping of Sarawak rivers, followed by the countdown.

After that, there was a march past by all the 15 contingents, including guest contingent Brunei.

Themed ‘Unity in Diversity’, this year’s Sukma involved some 6,000 athletes and 1,000 officials in 24 sports, with Sarawak having the largest contingent with 544 athletes.

The highlight of the ceremony was the baton run by 18 former athletes who had brought honours to Sarawak and nation. They were led by Tania Bugo and Watson Nyambek, who then placed the baton on the plaque at the centre stage.

The night also featured Limbang lad Bob Yusof of the Akademi Fantasia fame who performed the theme song ‘Berpadu Menyahut Cabaran’ accompanied by an award winning violinist Nisa Addina Mohd Taufik.
