S.E. Asia Nuclear Weapon Free Zone Senior Officials Meet in Vientiane

Lao PDR, Chair of ASEAN 2016, hosted the Meeting of the Executive Committee of the SEANWFZ Commission in Vientiane.

 

Chaired by Mr Alounkeo Kittikhoun, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office and Laos’ ASEAN SOM leader, the meeting witnessed the participation of senior officials’ leaders from ASEAN member states, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Political-Security Community and delegates.

 

The participants reviewed the progress in implementing the Plan of Action (POA) to Strengthen the Implementation of the SEANWFZ Treaty (2013-2017) and emphasized the importance of effective implementation of the said POA toward contributing to the maintenance and promotion of peace, stability, and cooperation in Southeast Asia.

 

They agreed to continue consultation with the Nuclear Weapon States to resolve all outstanding issues with regard to the signing of the SEANWFZ Treaty Protocol by tasking the SEANWFZ Working Group to continue discussion in this regard.
