At least one book on women’s contributions to the state will be launched at the annual state-level Women’s Day celebration.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said her ministry had resolved to do so to recognise the contributions of women in certain fields.

“We are determined to publish at least one book each year to document women’s contributions in particular fields. It is to recognise the contributions of women through these books,” she told a press conference at her office at Masja in Petra Jaya yesterday.

This year, Sarawak will hold its state-level Women’s Day at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Oct 8.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem is expected to officiate at the celebration which will also see the launch of a new book ‘Sarawak Women in Education: Shaping The Mind, Body and Spirit’.

The book, which is expected to be ready by Sept 1, features 34 personalities who are outstanding educators.

The ministry has launched six books in conjunction with the state-level Women’s Day celebrations since 2010.

The books are ‘Sarawak Women: Treading The Path of Post Independence Years’, ‘Sarawak Women in Politics’, ‘Sarawak Women in Business: Their Stories’, ‘Sarawak Women in Volunteerism: Caring Hearts, Touching Lives’, ‘Sarawak Women in Politics: The Pioneers’ and ‘Sarawak Women in the Arts’.

Despite the ministry’s resolution (a book each year), Fatimah said two books ‘Sarawak Women in Sports’ and ‘Sarawak Women in Volunteerism: Part II’ were already lined up for next year’s celebration.

On ‘Sarawak Women in Education: Shaping The Mind, Body and Spirit’, she said the book included the chronology of events on the opening of schools between 1948 and 2015.

On the new book, she said its inaugural publication will be 500 copies.

Once launched, she said the book would be available for sale at Wisma Wanita.

She encouraged libraries throughout the state to purchase a copy.
