Mekong–Ganga Foreign Ministers Adopt Key Documents

Mekong–Ganga countries’ foreign ministers have adopted a joint ministerial statement and Plan of Action to implement Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC) from 2016-2018.
Adopted at the 7th Mekong–Ganga Cooperation Ministerial Meeting in Vientiane on July 24, the two documents will set the way forward to implement the Mekong-Ganga Cooperation.
The meeting was attended by Foreign Ministers from Mekong–Ganga countries namely Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and India.
The foreign ministers also expressed satisfaction on the progress recorded over the past years, particularly, cooperation on human resources development as India has been providing over 900 scholarships annually under the Indian Technical and Economic Programme to Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.
The MGC is implementing 20 Quick Impact Projects including three projects in Laos.
They also discussed future direction, especially the expansion of their cooperation by involving small and medium enterprises, conservation of rice germplasm, health, and management of pandemics.
The 8th Mekong–Ganga Cooperation Ministerial Meeting will be convened in the Republic of the Philippines in 2017. It will be chaired by the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
Mekong countries are namely Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
