BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Dayang Nadirah Nasihah binti Awang Haji Mohd Hassan won a photography contest organised in conjunction with the 2016 World Meteorological Day to highlight the weather and climate issues.

The twenty-five-year-old who has just graduated from Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) submitted as her entry a photo captioned 'Man of Fire'.

She received her prize along with the other winners at a ceremony held by the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) of the Ministry of Communications (MinCom) at the arrival hall of Brunei International Airport yesterday.

Present as the guest of honour to present the prizes was the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications, Awang Haji Azhar bin Awang Haji Ahmad.

Awang Shahalmie bin Awang Haji Emran, Coordinator and Technical Officer of BDMD who is also Head of the Secretariat of the ceremony, said the contest was held not only to showcase the talents of local photographers, but also to raise public awareness of the weather and climate issues which often have an impact on individuals, communities and socio-economic development.

The guest of honour also viewed an exhibition of the photographs submitted by the contestants. The exhibition will be open to the public from July 27-30, 2016.

The contest whose theme was 'The Impact of Weather in Our Country' was organised by the BDMD along with the Association of Photographers Brunei Darussalam and the Brunei Photographic Society. The World Meteorological Day was celebrated on March 23.

The participants submitted their photos with captions that describe various scenarios about the weather and its impact on us. Voting was made through BDMD's Facebook.
