BERAKAS, BRUNEI-MUARA

The four Bruneian students who have been selected to take part in the 7th Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Programme (SEAYLP) this year sponsored by the United States Department of States are expected to gain skills that can be utilised in the development of Brunei Darussalam.

Accompanied by a female teacher, the three male students and a female student, aged between 15 and 17 years from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS), left the country yesterday.

They will spend three weeks in the US and take part in various programmes alongside other Asean students and those from the host country.

The 60 participants who consist of high school students and their adult mentors will focus on civic education, leadership, diversity and volunteerism that aim to prepare them in conducting projects at home that serve a community need.

The participants will reside with American families for most of the exchange period and will be provided with multiple opportunities to interact with American youth and educators.

They will visit several locations including museums as well as non governmental organisations (NGOs) as part of their tours in Washington and Chicago, the latter of which is home to programme host Northern Illinois University.

As part of their preparations for the trip, the Bruneian students conducted research on three thematic topics, namely, environmental sustainability, vulnerable groups and education where they had learned teamwork, responsibilities, trust, respect and leadership.

They also familiarised themselves with the regional martial art, Silat, which they will perform during the cultural performance portion of the US programme.
