Eighteen-Foot Crocodile Caught in Tutong

TUTONG

After catching an 18-toot crocodile, the buffalo breeders at Kampong Bakiau, Jalan Kecil Birau-Sentul in Tutong said they are still on a hunt for a massive and more elusive crocodile that has been terrorising their buffaloes.

Mohd Isa bin Haji Laih, one of the local farmers who caught the large crocodile yesterday using a live-bait, told the Bulletin that crocodiles in the area have been preying on their buffaloes and just last month two of his buffaloes were eaten, while some were left without limbs.

To save their buffaloes, the farmers constructed traps, but it was not an easy task. The crocodiles, especially the bigger ones have been elusive.

According to Mrad Isa, who has been a farmer all his life, the crocodiles would not take a chunk of meat as bait, it has to be the whole animal.

Villagers like Mohd Isa, Maidin bin Haji Taripin and Haji Kamaluddin bin Haji Sabtu are still on the look-out for more crocodiles.

However, using just a chicken on this occasion, they were successful in catching one of the big crocodiles  approximately 18 feet in length.

He said, by catching these crocodiles, it would also make the place safer for the community, including those who frequent the river area for fishing activities.

Talking to the Media, the farmers said crocodiles are not rare in the area as duringhigh tide one can see the smaller or the baby crocodiles.

The 18-footer was not the biggest they have caught as years back they caught a much bigger crocodile.

The crocodile is not considered an endangered animal in Brunei, and the Tutong River is home to quite a number of them. Sightings on the river are not rare, and in the past there have been human victims of crocodile attacks.
