Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith is urging government officials, the private sector and all members of Lao society to take part in the preparations planned for hosting the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits and related summits in a good manner to ensure that the events are successful and go according to plan.

On Aug 19, Prime Minister Thongloun convened in Vientiane Capital the Heads of all 13 sub-committees that are responsible for making preparations for the coming summits to be held in the capital city from Sep 6-8.

Relevant ministries and departments were also represented at last Friday’s meeting.

The meeting aimed to evaluate preparations that have been made by the subcommittees for September’s major events in public security, content, logistics, and protocol affairs, and also the remaining challenges.

Participants of the meeting were told that each subcommittee is wholly responsible for its assignment and that all preparations must be completed.

The ASEAN Summits will be held along with 11 related summits and meetings including the 19th ASEAN-China Summit to commemorate the 25th anniversary of ASEAN-China dialogue relations, the 19th ASEAN-Japan Summit, the 18th ASEAN-R. Korean Summit, the 19th ASEAN Plus Three Summit, the 2nd ASEAN-Australia Summit, the 8th ASEAN-UN Summit, the 8th Mekong-Japan Summit, the 14th ASEAN-India Summit, the 4th ASEAN-US Summit, the 11th East Asia Summit, and the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit.

It is expected that as many as 17 documents will be adopted at the coming summits and meetings.

These include the Vientiane Declaration on Transition from Informal Employment to Formal Employment towards Decent Work Promotion in ASEAN, the Vientiane Declaration on Reinforcing Cultural Heritage Cooperation in ASEAN, and the ASEAN Declaration on One ASEAN One Response: ASEAN Responding to Disasters as One in the Region and Outside the Region, among others.
