The Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT), Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Health yesterday organised a briefing on proper fish-handling and hygienic practices in fish markets at the MPRT Hall.
The briefing was attended by fishmongers from the Gadong wet market as well as officers and staff of the three ministries.
The briefing was held amid grievances from the public concerning the poor quality of fish sold at the fish market in Gadong including the unsatisfactory condition of its cleanliness.
Surveillance made by the Fisheries Department has proven the unsatisfactory cleanliness of the fish market.
The Fisheries Department has taken the initiative to promote proper hygienic practices in fish markets by providing posters and pamphlets on cleanliness, issuing 'warnings of legal actions that may be taken against fishmongers selling fish that could affect health adversely and cause contamination as well as guidelines on how to buy and choose fresh fish.
The Fisheries Department along with the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department has also put up posters at the entrance and walkway of the Gadong market to provide cleanliness guidelines to serve as reference for the market management and provide knowledge on choosing quality, fresh and safe fish.
The posters and pamphlets will soon be distributed nationwide to fish markets, supermarkets and consumers.
