BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam (SOBD) yesterday organised a Health Education Forum titled 'Sexuality Talk: Special Needs Children & Adolescent' at the Multipurpose Hall of Girls High School (STPRI).

Present was Lt Colonel (Rtd) Pengiran Haji Rambli bin Pengiran Haji Bunut, Chairman of SOBD, who delivered a welcoming speech explaining that the lecture aimed to give exposure on the importance of sex education and knowing its challenges as well as its objective for parents, teachers, and youths specifically those that have special needs children and adolescents.

"The issue of sexual education is nothing new; the implementation of sex education or to speak of sex is a controversial issue and is seen as taboo by some parties," said the SOBD Chairman. "That is because the terminology of `sex' brings about a different meaning to some and it is still considered a stigma in our society".

The chairman went on to say that the negative preconception towards the implementation of sex education for children with special needs, especially with those who have learning difficulties, has caused neglect towards the topic.

The event then continued with a talk from Dayang Hajah Azlina Roszy binti Mohamad Gaffar, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist from the Atfal Jannah & Annur Specialist Hospital, titled 'Sexual and Reproductive Health Education: For Children with Special Needs'.

The talk focused on a numberof issues comprising sexual and reproductive health for adolescent with special needs; puberty and brain maturation; developmental changes in adolescents; teaching adolescents with special needs about sexual and reproductive health; sexuality issues in adolescents with special needs; and empowering adolescents with knowledge and better communication.
