BERAKAS, BRUNEI-MUARA
Belait District Football Association (PBDB) still harbour hopes to make a late dash to the second round of the DST National Veteran Football League President Cup with victory against Terazza FC despite having to rely on favours from other teams as Group 'D' reach its anti-climax.
The Belait-based side was dealt a crushing blow of securing a late surge into the second round after Tanah Jambu FT rescued a point at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex last Sunday.
The result leave them outside the qualifying places in third and little room to comfort meaning they need to win against the basement dwellers to stand any hopes of advancing to the next phase.
Even victory may not suffice as fellow district rivals Brunei Shell Recreation Club (BSRC) could secure qualification if they open a five-point gap to second-placed Tanah Jambu FT.
BSRC face the danger of elimination if they mess up against TJ in their final group game and open the door for PBDB though they still face a job in search of maximum points.
TJ are due to meet Setia Bakti 'B' once the BSRC game is completed but Haji Jailani is not occupied with thoughts of their progress.
"We still cling to hopes of progressing to the next stage but no doubt we need to find goals in this game (against Terazza). At present, we are competing with BSRC and if BSRC are defeated by TJ FT in their final game, we feel that the advantage will be ours," said PBDB coach Haji Jailani Haji Md Husain.
"The points between us and BSRC are not distant and if they lose and we win, we could find ourselves at top two in the table," he added.
"We need to win the last game against Terazza and hope that this game will rain goals to ensure a greater goal difference".
But adding complications to a qualifying berth are contender Setia Bakti 'B' who seemingly are very much in the hunt to go through from Group 'D' and Haji Jailani is aware of it.
The coach admitted that age played a factor in the destination of the result after surrendering a two-goal lead against TJ, who could have gone top with victory.
