Public Warned on Trans-Boundary Haze, Expected Gusty Showers

 August 29th, 2016  |  06:45 AM  |   992 views

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Brunei Darussalam is currently at the peak of the Southwest Monsoon period where weather conditions tend to be slightly hazy - mainly originating from trans-boundary haze. Gusty showers are also expected at times due to the indirect tail-end effects of typhoons or tropical storms occurring over the South China Sea and the Western Pacific Ocean.

By October and up to November, the country is expected to undergo the transitional (inter-monsoon) period where weather conditions are usually influenced by local wind effects that play a crucial role in the formation of localised thunderstorms. These storms are more likely to develop over the interior parts of the country during the afternoon and then spread across coastal and sea areas at night.

Based on the current regional weather situationand latest seasonal climate forecasts from leading world climate centres, La Nina is slightly favoured to develop over the Pacific Ocean during August and October with 55 to 60 percentage chances of La Nina occurring during the end of 2016 and early 2017.

From previous events, the impact of a strong La Nina to Brunei Darussalam is a significant increase in rainfall amount that resulted in a number of flash floods due to prolonged heavy rain. Since the likelihood of the phenomena occurring is still minimal, its impacts to the weather patterns in our region in the coming months is also quite low. However, the amount of rainfall is predicted to be slightly higher than average during the end of this year.

The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department will be monitoring the weather conditions and will issue weather advisories or warnings as and when necessary. The public can keep updated of the latest weather by visiting www.met.gov.bn, bruneiweather on Facebook or via the Brunei WX mobile application. The public can also contact the Duty Meteorological Forecaster through the weather line 114.
