BERAKAS, BRUNEI-MUARA

Nineteen Bruneians headed to Japan recently for the JENESYS (Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths) 2016 programme.

The delegation of nine students and ten youths are joining 200 other youths from 10 countries, including eight Asean member countries, Timor-Leste and India.

After spending two days in Tokyo, the participants will be divided into three groups to visit the Miyagi, Aichi, and Osaka prefectures respectively.

In each prefecture, they will make a courtesy call to the local government and attend information sessions about its local characteristics, as well as its connection to their home countries.

These visits will be followed by a trip to an automobile, air-conditioner, or analytical/ medical instruments factory, such as Toyota Motor Corporation, Mitsubishi Motors, Daikin Industries, Shimadzu Corporation or the state-of-the-art horticultural facilities of GRA Incorporated, an advanced agricultural production company.

They will also have a chance to visit Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and hear from local Japanese companies that are interested in trading with or investing in their home countries.

Additionally, participants will be extensively exposed to Japanese history and culture through visits to historical sites such as Narita-san Shinshoji Temple, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Okazaki Castle or the Samurai Museum. They will also experience traditional culture or art such as a tea ceremony, knife sharpening or wadaiko (Japanese drums).

Some participants will experience a homestay or home visit with a local host family, while others will stay at local farms where they will meet people in the local community.

Throughout the programme, students and youths will not only learn about and experience cultural and historical aspects of Japan, but will also witness and learn about the advanced technology used by Japanese manufacturers, as well as meet Japanese people who are very keen to build business relationships with Brunei Darussalam.

The Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam hopes that JENESYS 2016 will contribute to cultivating talented people to lead the way forward for economic diversification within Brunei.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan promotes people-to-people exchanges between Japan and various nations within the Asia-Pacific, North American, European, Latin American, and Caribbean regions.

The Asian and Oceanian regional component of this exchange programme is called JENESYS 2016. Approximately 3,400 youths will be involved with JENESYS 2016 between Japan and Asean member states (AMS), Timor-Leste and India.

The theme 'Economics' has been set to strengthen Asia-Pacific economic partnership. Under JENESYS 2016, 2,360 youths from AMS, Timor-Leste and India have been invited to Japan.
