Tourism Entrepreneurs to Exploit Temburong Eco-Tourism Destination

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Tourism product and service providers are looking to tap the vast potential of the Temburong District as the country's ecotourism destination to attract not only foreign tourists but also locals.

Sugumaran Nair, the Inbound and Meeting Incentive Conference Exhibition (MICE) Division Manager of Freme Travel Services, said yesterday so far about 1,600 people have visited the Freme Adventure Park and Rainforest Lodge in Batang Dui. He was speaking on the sidelines of the launching ceremony of the new Temburong Holiday Destination packages.

Freme Travel is one of the travel agents in the Sultanate that is aggressively promoting Temburong. Offering attractions such as the first of its kind 43-metre climbing tower, a 130-metre-high flying fox that spans across the Batang Dun River and a 70-metre-long suspension bridge, the adventure park and lodge offers visitors plenty of thrills and adventure. The facilities cost around $400,000 to build.

He said a longhouse-style luxury facility which is under construction at the adventure park and lodge will further boost tourism that could aid in the diversification of the country's economy.

With the tagline 'Brunei Rainforest Adventure', the adventure park and lodge aims to attract more Bruneian visitors through special deals this September in conjunction with the Teacher's Day celebration.

Meanwhile, Leslie Chiang, the Managing Director of Hasa Incentives Sdn Bhd, the operator of Sumbiling Eco Village, said, "There is a very high potential for Brunei to further develop Temburong for ecotourism".

He said Temburong has pristine rainforests where people can learn to appreciate nature as well as understand and experience the culture and traditions of the local ethnic communities.

Sumbiling Eco Village offers community-based tourism that involves the local community, especially Kampong Sumbiling Lama in Temburong where visitors can stay one night at the longhouse to experience the ethnic culture or in tents for a, truly rainforest experience.

Hasa Incentives through its tour and travel services brand Borneo Guide is also looking at Selapon and Senokoh in Temburong as potential new areas for ecotourism.

Leslie said the Sumbiling Eco Village will host the 'Borneo Rainforest Warrior' event at end of the year, while the 'Reflection in the Rainforest', a yoga retreat will take place in October this year.
