Things took a tight turn as a senior government servant charged with theft and forgery of two blank pre-signed cheques pleaded guilty to what he had earlier denied.
Forty-five-year-old Amirrudin bin Haji Junaidi, pleaded guilty to all five charges before Justice James Findlay, who then adjourned the case to give time for the defendant to prepare his mitigations and to submit in the next mention of the case on September 8.
The defendant stole two blank pre-signed cheques from the victim's residence, whose occupants were abroad, after being entertained by the housemaid. The account to the cheques were a joint account of the victim and her mother's but was transferred to the sole name of the victim after her mother had passed away.
Sometime between February 25 and 26 of 2015, the defendant wrote his name as payee and an amount of $60,000 on one of the cheques and successfully transferred the amount into his personal account by deposit at a bank's cheque deposit machine. This act was caught on CCTV camera.
On March 10, 2015, the defendant wrote down his name as payee on another stolen bank cheque and successfully transferred $40,000 from the victim's account to his personal account by deposit at a bank's cheque deposit machine.
Again this act was caught on camera. However, the transfer was voided due to the lack of funds in the victim's account.
On March 11, 2015, the void transaction prompted the bank employee to contact the victim's brother to inform him that a further deposit of $17,000 was required to complete the transfer transaction of $40,000.
The victim's brother contacted her, who confirmed that she did not issue the cheques. This also prompted the victim to call her bank's manager and found out the payee was the defendant, leading to the exposure of the defendant's commission of the offences.
DPP Muhammad Abdul Raafe' bin Haji Ibrahim represented the Public Prosecutor.
