A road accident victim was found dead in a drain at a traffic island at Tuaran Bypass, near KFC restaurant.
City police chief ACP M. Chandra said the victim was believed killed just before midnight on Monday.
“Police investigation revealed that the victim, identified as Arsad Bin Mohamad, 29, from Kampung Forest Jalan Pantai, Sandakan, was hit by a Perodua Myvi car while crossing the road around 11.30pm on September 5.
“The driver of the Perodua Myvi car, a 48-year-old man, claimed in his police report to have hit something while he was heading to the city centre from Telipok.
“The driver then drove to the Kota Kinabalu traffic police station to lodge a report the same night.
“Around 8.45am today (yesterday), police from Menggatal received information about a lifeless body in a drain at Tuaran Bypass.
“Police now believe the deceased was the victim of the road accident the previous night before,” said Chandra yesterday.
The victim’s body has been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1 for a post-mortem and efforts are being made to contact the next-of-kin.
Police have also detained the driver of the Perodua Myvi car to assist investigations under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
