Since the second wave of COVID-19 hit the country, it has affected the everyday life of all people as well as the public services including the Court's standard practice. Hence, this has caused backlogs in most cases. However, the Court had conducted a virtual hearing as a proactive measure in delivering justice.

 

Based on statistic from the Brunei Darussalam Civil Court, 1,238 virtual hearings conducted since Business Continuity Plan, BCP started.

 

From the total numbers, 242 cases were heard virtually at the High Court. Civil cases has recorded the highest case with 51 percent, followed by Originating Summon 23 percent, Bankruptcy 16 percent, Criminal Trial 3 percent, Criminal Appeal 1 percent, Petition 5 percent and Admiralty in rem 1 percent.

 

In Intermediate Court, 264 cases were heard virtually. Civil cases recorded the highest which is 59 percent compared to Criminal Trial 37 percent and Commercial by 4 percent.

 

Meanwhile, the Magistrate Court recorded a total of 645 cases via virtual hearing. Criminal Trial has recorded the highest with 65 percent. 9 percent Civil Suit cases, 10 percent Juvenile cases, 2 percent Inquest cases and 14 percent Road Traffic Act.
