KOTA KINABALU

A 26-year-old contractor was killed in a three-vehicle collision along Jalan Kolombong, near Taman Iramanis, here early Saturday morning.

Wilson Kong Chung Tzer, 26, who drove a Toyota Hilux, was pronounced dead at the scene while four other people from the Toyota Aristo and BMW cars were injured in the 1am incident.

Lintas fire and rescue station chief Agustavia Joe Guasi said a distress call was received at 1.05am before a team was dispatched to the location, about four kilometers from the station.

Agustavia said the Toyota Aristo that was involved in the accident caught fire and fire and rescue personnel managed to control the blaze a couple of minutes upon their arrival.

The driver of the Toyota Hilux succumbed to his injuries while a 30-year-old car driver and a 23-year-old passenger were taken to hospital in ambulances for further treatment, said Agustavia.

Also slightly injured were the 26-year-old BMW driver and 25-year-old passenger of another car that was involved in the crash. All were sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here for treatment.

Kota Kinabalu City deputy police chief Supt George Abd Rakman said initial investigation found that two of the vehicles were heading towards Penampang via Jalan Lintas when a third vehicle came out of an intersection and caused the crash.

“One of the car drivers was thrown into a small drain following the crash,” he said.

Supt George said that the first car caught fire but the blaze was put out by the BMW driver.

“The BMW driver put out the fire with the help of a petrol station employee who was present at the accident site,” he added.

He said police were investigating the accident under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“The public who saw or have more information on the accident are asked to come forward to assist in the investigation,” he said.

Meanwhile, police in Tawau are investigating a three-vehicle accident which claimed the life of a 21-year-old motorcyclist at Km 10 Jalan Tawau-Bombalai on Thursday.

Tawau district police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said on Saturday that the motorcyclist was overtaking when a collision occurred with a four-wheel drive and a car.
