BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The two-day conference on 'Libraries Transform: Unlocking Your Potential as Librarians', organised by the Brunei Darussalam Library Association (BLA), in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), concluded yesterday at the Lecture Theatre of the university with several resolutions and recommendations.

Nellie binti Dato Paduka Haji Sunny, President of BLA, in her speech at the closing ceremony noted that the resolutions calling on the government and private sector partnerships and continuous support from those mentioned to be given due recognition.

The need to support the profession and further library development in the country and to put libraries on the top of their agenda was also stated.

The conference also called for the regulation of trainings and certification of librarians, invigoration of the profession by engaging librarians to be active players in the national, regional and international library scene and to organise regular conferences.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Pengiran Dr Haji Md Esa Al-Islam bin Pengiran Haji Md Yunus, Assistant Vice Chancellor (Industry and Services) of UTB.

Pengiran Dr Haji Md Esa Al-Islam highlighted that the importance of library services has long been recognised, most prominently in the academic environment and the provision of information to the academic community.

He added that libraries have been transformed due to the information required from the academics becoming increasingly more complex.

The era of digital technology, he added, has revolutionised the way information is provided and accessed.

"In order to support this, there is a need to provide library leadership in this dynamic and increasingly digital library environment with the aim to help libraries make use of new and emerging technologies by promoting and supporting technological experimentation and innovation and to increase leadership development and training opportunities designed to support the ongoing transformation of libraries," said Pengiran Dr Haji Md Esa Al-Islam.

Meanwhile, the BLA President in her welcoming remarks noted that the association will continue to support the professionalism of its members and librarians in general through its various activities.
