BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

A local man pleaded guilty yesterday to culpable homicide and the assault of his three-year-old niece, which ultimately caused her death.

However, he denied physically abusing his other niece, aged six, and scalding her with hot water.

Justice Pengiran Datin HajahRostainabinti Pengiran Haji Duraman ordered for the case to be brought to trial in November, and the sentencing to take place later.

The man, whose name has been withheld to protect the identity of the six-yearold, applied for bail, but his request was rejected by the court.

The first charge against the defendant states that he committed culpable homicide by inflicting fatal injuries on his three-year-old niece, an offence which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, or a fine, or both.

The second charge states that he assaulted her on the same occasion, an offence which carries a maximum fine of $20,000, a maximum prison term of 10 years and a maximum of 10 canings.

These offences were committed at 8.30am on August 17 at a house in Kampong Perpindahan Mentiri Awam.

The third charge against the defendant alleges that he abused his six-year-old niece, while the fourth charge accuses him of injuring the child by pouring hot water on her.

The third charge carries a maximum fine of $20,000, a maximum prison term of 10 years and a maximum of 10 canings, while the fourth charge carries a seven-year prison term combined with a caning.

These offences were said to have taken place between January 2015 and July 2016 at the same house.

DPP Nurjauinah Haji Kula presented the prosecution's case.
