BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council in a sabda reminded national athletes representing the country to the 22nd Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, to compete wholeheartedly and not just for the sake of participation. This, His Royal Highness added, will act as proof of the athletes' abilities and also to ensure the selection made by the National Athletes Evaluation and Selection Secretariat is truly transparent and not biased. His Royal Highness made the Sabda at the Handover Ceremony of the National Flag to the national contingent to the Games. The event took place yesterday morning at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.

Upon arrival His Royal Highness was greeted by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Awang Haji Mohamad, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. In his welcoming speech, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports said that although the national contingent to the Games is small, but the continuous participation shows the country's commitment towards the Commonwealth and international level sports events. His Royal Highness stressed that the National Athletes Evaluation and Selection Secretariat should have a continuous training schedule and not relying on tournament. So that, the national athletes will always be ready to represent the country in any tournament.

His Royal Highness then handed over the national flag to Dk Siti Amal Jariah binti Pg Matjenen as the Chef de Mission. The national contingent comprises 7 athletes and 5 officers. The Commonwealth Games will start on the 28th of July until the 8th of August. Brunei Darussalam will participate in two events, namely Lawn Bowling and Weightlifting. The contingent will depart for Birmingham, England THIS Sunday.
