Thirty eight Vietnamese fishermen yesterday changed their pleas of not guilty to guilty of fishing in Brunei waters illegally.
The vessel master was ordered to pay a fine of $10,000 or ten months' jail in default, while 37 of its crewmen were fined $1,000 each or two months' jail in default of payment.
Chief magistrate Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Dato Haji Kefli ordered the immediate imprisonment of the defendants, aged between 21 and 49, after they confirmed they were not being able to pay the fines.
The defendants were detained last August 31, 2016 at 8.45am when they were found fishing in two foreign-registered vessels in Brunei waters.
