This was revealed during a press conference yesterday at the Auditorium of iCentre by a panellist comprising Mohd Rano Iskandar, Organising Chair of the Brunei Conference 2016; Gerald Goh, Marketing Executive of the Brunei Conference 2016; Shawn Cassidy Narcis, Protocol Director of the Brunei Conference and Programme Quality Director of District 87; Allen Ang, Mandarin Session Coordinator of the Brunei Conference 2016; and Stuart Lee, featured speaker for the Brunei Conference 2016.
Each year the Toastmasters Semi- Annual District Conference culminates in the final round of the Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest where the District Champion is chosen.
During the event, 30 English and Mandarin contestants from Brunei, East Malaysia and Indonesia deliver five to seven minute humorous speeches and a three-minute evaluation on a test speaker that are judged by a panel of experienced Toastmasters.
It was explained that, as an integral part of the conference, educational workshops are conducted by renowned public speakers, trainers and industrial leaders, and for the first time, the conference will feature three World Champions of Public Speaking - Dananjaya J Hettiarachchi from Sri Lanka, Willie Jones from the United States of America, and Darren Tay from Singapore.
Other featured speakers include Muhammed Murad, former President of Toastmasters International; Soon Loo, Chief Executive Officer of DARE (Darussalam Enterprise); and Stuart Lee, a Human Resource Development Fund-certified trainer and consultant.
Lu Li Ming from Sandakan and Liw Hui Peng from Bintulu, both Mandarin speakers, will also attend the Brunei Conference 2016 for the Mandarin session.
"This is bound to be the biggest toastmasters event ever in Brunei Darussalam," said Mohd Rano.
The event is jointly organised by local speakers' clubs, namely, The Brunei Speakers' Club, Brunei Advanced Speakers' Club, Oil Town Talkers Toastmasters Club, and Universiti Brunei Darussalam
Toastmasters Club.
"The Brunei conference hopes to inspire youths to be confident communicators and leaders as part of their daily lives so he or she can empower others," added Mohd Rano. "These are reasons why I selected such speakers to be part of the biggest Toastmasters event in Brunei."
In line with Rano's vision, the conference is open to members of the public, where ticket prices vary for full day educational sessions as well as for tertiary/university students and secondary students.
The event is supported by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.
