PHNOM PENH

Cambodia's anti-drug police have arrested a gang of five local men for allegedly possessing and trafficking illicit drugs, confiscating more than 18 kilograms of narcotics, the Anti-Drug Police Department (ADP) said on Thursday.

The male suspects, aged between 22 and 42 years old, were apprehended during a raid on five locations in the capital city Phnom Penh and Banteay Meanchey's Poipet city on Sept. 17 after a thorough probe for months.

"A total of 18.29 kg of drugs, including crystal meth, ecstasy (MDMA), ketamine, and nimetazepam, as well as a pistol were seized from the suspects during the crackdown," the ADP said in a news release.

The Southeast Asian country has no death sentence for a drug trafficker. Under its law, someone found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illicit drugs could be jailed for life.

According to the ADP, Cambodia nabbed 10,545 drug suspects, including 154 foreigners, during the January-August period of 2022, seizing a total of 6.11 tons of narcotics.
