You can tell an election is on when a politician is asked basic things like ‘how much is a pint of milk?’
Designed to trip them up, they have become better versed at answering such questions so journalists have to be a bit more creative in their questioning.
For example, Rishi Sunak was asked what his ‘go-to’ McDonald’s is on This Morning.
He said that if he is eating there with his daughters he has a penchant for the breakfast wrap.
Problem.
The breakfast wrap was axed at the beginning of the pandemic and earlier this year McDonald’s confirmed it would not be coming back.
However, his aides have defended him telling the Daily Mail: ‘Rishi has barely seen his kids in the last two and half years since he became chancellor so there has been almost no opportunity to share a McDonald’s with them.
‘He’s hoping they might consider bringing the breakfast wrap back on the menu.’
Last week, he joked about how he had to be shown how to use a contactless card to pay after he appeared confused at a petrol station.
He went to pay for fuel – and his favourite ‘cheeky Coke’ – and ended up waving his debit card in front of the cashier, holding it in front of the barcode scanner.
He then posted a picture of himself paying at a McDonald’s self-service machine saying ‘Nailed it’.
Comedian Liam Tulley pointed out: ‘You’ve clearly not “nailed it”. Your order has already gone through, but you’re still standing there like a dipstick holding your card to the reader.’
