MANILA, PHILIPPINES
The first-term holiday was a well-spent one for some St George's School (SGS) teachers and their families.
During their visit to the Philippines, they opted to visit two schools, the Singapore School Manila, an international school that caters for pre-school to 'O' Level students, and the Junior High School Department of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), the oldest university in the Philippines established in 1611.
"This trip was part of the ongoing Professional Development Programme to keep SGS teachers abreast with the latest educational developments by sharing best practices," said Janidi Jingan, Principal of SGS, who led the delegation.
It was a combination of educational tour and recreation with shopping, he added.
Both schools warmly welcomed the delegates who were taken on a tour around the institutions. The group was given the chance to observe some classes as well.
One of the highlights of the visit was the jaw-dropping performances presented by talented students from the Junior High School Department UST, who like SGS' Glee Club, have garnered prizes from renowned choir competitions.
"We were humbled by the warm welcome and hospitality offered by the principal, teachers and students of Junior
High School Department, UST. It was indeed an experience we can never forget, particularly the impressive performance from the talented students, the actual classroom teaching and learning as well as the tour around the school facilities," Janidi Jingan said.
"We also had fruitful discussions with the principal and heads of department of Junior High School and the principal of the Senior High School with regard to current changes in the educational system and its possible effects on Filipino students in Brunei. Several doubts and questions raised by Filipino parents to St George's School were clarified and answered, thanks to the administrators of UST," he added.
"We were also delighted to have the opportunity to pay a courtesy call on Mario A Deriquito, Undersecretary, Partnerships and External Linkages, Department of Education, during which we had a very meaningful discussion."
The group also enjoyed the theme parks in Manila like the Ocean Park, the historic Intramuros and Luneta parks where Philippine heroes like Jose Rizal were imprisoned and executed.
The jeepney ride was another worth remembering experience for some of the teachers aside from the Filipino food that they all enjoyed.
