BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Brunei Darussalam Scouts Association (PPNBD) sent three of their scouts commissioners to participate in the Asia-Pacific Regional Workshop on Disaster Response Management, organised by the Asia-Pacific Regional (APR) scouts in collaboration with the Scout Association of Japan.

They are Belait District Scout Commissioner, Haji Md Salleh bin Haji Ahmad; Acting Scout Commissioner for Risk and Safety Section, Haji Murad bin Abdul Hadi; and Scout Commissioner for Scout Special Needs, Haji Mohammad Paizzal bin Haji Piluk.

The five-day workshop from October 5-9 is held at Tsukuba International Congress Centre in Ibaraki, Japan.

The workshop is attended by more than 40 scout leaders from 17 countries in the Asia-Pacific region and aims to gather scout leaders at the national and district levels who are involved in disaster management.

The objectives of the workshop is to bring understanding on the nature of global risk, identify the best preventive methods in disaster management, and how best to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters locally
and internationally.

According to    Executive Scout Officer Zainuddin bin Haji Ishak, participants attending the workshop will be able to introduce key concepts in disaster management and identify the role of scouts at preduring-post disaster stages and at the same time develop a system of networking among and within the National Scout Organisations (NSO) in managing relief work.

The workshop is a continuation of their participation at the Asia-Pacific Regional Risk Management Forum organised by Asia-Pacific Regional scouts in collaboration with the Scouts of Malaysia held at the International Youth Centre in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last September.

In today's world, it is a must that people are always prepared since in last decade, the countries in the Asia-Pacific regions had suffered from deadly disasters such as tsunamis, floods, earthquakes, typhoons, forest fires, landslides and other disasters with some of them having a recurrence gap that is shortening.

It is perceived as a member of the scouts to 'Be Prepared' to face the challenges and be able to serve efficiently.

As identified by top NSO leaders during the last summit and in the APR Conference, in this triennium, there will be a focus on strengthening capacities in disaster response.

Present to send-off the participants at the Brunei International Airport yesterday was Scout Chief Commissioner Haji Badar bin Haji Ali as well as Deputy Scout Chief Commissioner Haji Ismail bin Pehin Orang Kayak Ratna Setia Dato Setia Haji Awang Hapidz, Secretary-General of PPNBD Haji Zainuddin bin Haji Jaafar and PPNBD Chief Executive Officer Haji Mohd Zali bin Haji Arsad.
