SOBD Host 2nd Young Athletes Ribbon Day

Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam (SOBD) recently hosted the 2nd Young Athletes Ribbon Day at the Royal Brunei Police Force Headquarters Stadium for children with and without intellectual disabilities, their families, teachers and special needs educators from both the government and private sectors as well as non-government organisations (NGOs).
SOBD Young Athletes and their families from seven special needs centres, associations, schools and community were invited to participate in fun physical activities together.
According to a SOBD press release, "Our objective is to create awareness of this Special Olympics Young Athletes" sports programme as well as advocate for inclusion of children with special needs. They include ABLE Down Syndrome Association, La Vida Bhd, Pusat Ehsan, Freda Radin Primary School, Joyful Kids Montessori, Rising Star Child Development School, SOBD Young Athletes Community group.
"We are very glad to see that more and more schools and centres are using the Young Athletes resources from Special Olympics Young Athletes programme sponsored by the Special Olympics International (USA) and Toys R Us (USA) and also the invaluable support locally from Fitness Zone and She Runs charity," said Young Athletes Director Dawn Lee.
"Special thanks also goes to the Police Headquarters for their support as venue host for numerous Special Olympics Asia Pacific competitions as well as local events such as the Young Athletes Ribbon Day. This year we have also strong support of 120 youth volunteers from the tertiary institutions for this event."
Special Olympics Young Athletes is a unique early childhood sport and play programme for children ages two through seven that includes fun physical activities that support mental and physical growth.
At Young Athletes, participants with and without intellectual disabilities learn basic sport skills like kicking, throwing a ball and playing with others, which helps to develop important motor, social and cognitive skills. This programme is run in homes, schools and community programmes around the globe.
Through this programme, SOBD hopes to continue to promote inclusive health and fitness to children from a young age working with schools and centres as well as families in the community.
