A father of four pleaded guilty yesterday to committing theft, but told the presiding magistrate, "I did it because my three-month-old baby needed milk."
Kharol Zukria bin Alias, 31, who is unemployed, pleaded guilty to stealing a gas cylinder from a house in Kampong Sungai Liang.
The court was informed of how Kharol went to the house at around 5.15pm, on September 28, with the intention of asking for the phone number of a scrap metal dealer.
While the house owner was occupied with searching for the requested number, he managed to steal a gas cylinder from the kitchen and carried it to his car. Later, he sold it for $40 to a tuck
shop.
Kharol was arrested on October 6, when a friend of the victim recognised his car and called the police.
The offence carries the penalty of seven years in prison and a fine, but Kharol has appealed for only the fine to be imposed, with the reason that both his children and mother depend on him for transport.
Magistrate Azrimah binti Haji Abdul Rahman, however, fixed October 12 as the date of sentencing and ordered him to be remanded at Jerudong Prison.
Deputy Public Prosecutor, Kamaliah binti Haji Ibrahim presented the prosecution's case.
