Malaysian National Caught Smuggling Alcholic Beverages

A Malaysian national was ordered to pay a fine of $1,000 by the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court for smuggling alcoholic beverages into the country.
The defendant, Adih anak Anau, 41, pleaded guilty before the Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman for keeping 12 cans and four bottles of alcoholic beverages in his vehicle when he was detained at the Kuala Lurah Customs Control Post on September 21, 2016 at about 6.50am by a Customs officer.
The official stopped the defendant's vehicle and asked whether he had anything to declare to which he replied that he wanted to declare alcoholic beverage.
Twenty-four cans and six bottles of alcoholic beverages that were kept at the rear trunk of the defendant's vehicle were found during the inspection.
The defendant was detained and the items in his possession were seized for further investigations.
During investigation, the defendant told that he was from Limbang and admitted that all the alcoholic beverages belonged to him which he bought at a shop at Limbang for a total price of $44.
He admitted that he declared only 12 cans and two bottles of alcoholic beverages to the officer on duty. Although he said that the beverages were only for his own consumption, the Customs Prosecuting Officer informed the court that an excise duty amounting to $56 was to be paid for the alcoholic beverages that were not declared by the defendant.
The defendant paid the fine and the Magistrate ordered for all the sized items listed in the notice of seizure to be forfeited to the state.
