Fitness instructors have been told to dress in decent attire when conducting aerobics, Zumba and spinning classes.
Failure to comply with the requirement will result in the immediate closure of the business premises, said Haji Mohammad Sunadi bin Haji Buntar, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) yesterday.
He also said businesses must conduct group fitness activities involving both men and women only in open areas such as a multipurpose hall or studio.
The deputy permanent secretary was speaking with the media on the sidelines of a briefing titled 'Assessment of Health and Beauty Establishments' (PEKKa) at the Kuala Belait Convention Centre. The briefing is part of the continuous monitoring of health and beauty businesses by the MoHA.
About 100 representatives from health and beauty establishments under the jurisdiction of the Belait District Office and the Kuala Belait-Seria Municipal Department attended the briefing.
"We want business owners to understand that the demerit system (under PEKKa) also acts as a guideline tailored towards operating under the concept of MIB (Malay Islamic Monarchy)," the deputy permanent secretary said.
He said the briefing was important in making business owners aware of what constitutes as an offence under the demerit system.
"The government is not trying to stop businesses but rather encourage their growth and it is imperative that they (health and beauty business establishments) follow the law," he added.
He said upholding the guideline is one of the ways to protect the values of the Sultanate.
Among the topics covered during the briefing was the application for the Health and Beauty Establishments (EKK) licence, delivered by Abu Bakar bin Haji Abduilah, an Assistant Municipal Officer Grade 1 at the Kuala Belait-Seria Municipal Department. He said that applications can be made to the Registry of Companies and Business Names (ROCBN) under the Ministry of Finance, while an EKK licence can be acquired from the MoHA counter at ROCBN and licence renewals can be made at Level 1, Design and Technology Building at Anggerek Desa Technology Park, or at the Business Facilitation Centre (BFC) at the Kuala Belait-Seria Municipal Department for business operators in the Belait District.
In an interview, he said that complaints on suspected violations can be forwarded to the municipal departments or district offices, depending on the location of the business premises.
