BRUNEI MUARA

The Fisheries Department, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism held an in-house training course titled 'Trainers Hygiene on Board' for the department's officers at its Fish Landing Complex in Muara.

The department is the authority responsible in carrying out control over the whole food chain starting from main producers to the processing and distribution of seafood.

The practice of cleanliness and quality control on hauls on board a fishing vessel is directly involved in ensuring food safety.

The course, which runs from October 10-13, was held to increase the internal capacity of the officers in the Fisheries Department in training, guiding, raising awareness and sharing knowledge on the importance of maintaining hygiene on board the fishing vessel and fish landing sites.

The course also sought to prepare and strengthen the capacity of the Fisheries Department, as they are responsible for exporting catches to international countries, as required by the European Union (EU).

Apart from being trained and groomed as internal trainers, the course also accommodated a practical session where participants were taught the best methods of handling fish, assessing the level of damage and quality of fish, practice of cleanliness on the fishing vessel and hygiene of workers and so on based on the 'Best Practise of Cleanliness on Board the Fishing Vessel and Fish Landing Guideline'.

The training also aimed to increase the participants' ability in monitoring and appreciating themselves as development officers.

The in-house training also sought to strengthen the capacity of officers of the department to be more confident as trainers who will educate entrepreneurs and workers of fishing vessels to promote food safety in the practise of cleanliness before, during, and after handling catches on deck either for export or for the local market.

The course was led by Siti Hasshura binti Hashim, from the Fisheries Biosecurity Division of Malaysia.

The four-day course was attended by 30 officers from the Fisheries Department.

The course will conclude today in a closing ceremony and the presentation of certificates will be carried out by the guest of honour, Mariani binti Haji Sabtu, Acting Director of Fisheries.
